La Familia Street Culture is an independent South African street-culture house, established in Johannesburg in 2014. Fashion, sneakers, music, cars, art and the people around them — built on knowledge, access and relationships, from a home in Johannesburg South to Main Road, Sea Point.
01Who we are
La Familia did not begin as a conventional sneaker shop. It grew out of Johannesburg’s street-culture scene — fashion, hip-hop, grooming, music and the communities forming around them — at a time when international streetwear, limited sneakers and resale were not yet presented to South Africans the way they are today.
We helped take premium sneaker and streetwear resale in South Africa to a professional level: authentic product, specialist knowledge, rare stock and a retail experience with real cultural context. The labels that redefined fashion in the 2010s — Off-White, Fear of God, Supreme, Yeezy, Rick Owens and Balenciaga — were part of our story early.
Today La Familia sources and presents premium sneakers, luxury fashion, independent streetwear and collectibles, with specialist sourcing for our clients. Most of what we sell, we own outright, alongside a small, select consignment offering. Our own label, Protect The Family, is styled alongside the houses our clients collect — Chrome Hearts, Rick Owens, Fear of God and Off-White — with rarer pieces offered to private clients through the concierge. The word culture has always meant something here: it is where we come from, not a theme we borrowed.
02The story
Before 2014
It starts in VatoKayde’s home: an appointment-only space for sneakers, Underated and Sprayground, with barbering, tattoos and night markets around it — a meeting point for fashion, hip-hop and the city’s creative scene.
2014
La Familia Street Culture is officially established in Johannesburg.
2015
An underground gym space in Sandton brings a wider audience, while keeping the personal, relationship-led character of the early days.
2016
Jan Smuts Avenue becomes the defining chapter: a visible home for collectors, artists and musicians, and the setting for La Familia’s role in professionalising sneaker resale in South Africa.
2017
Cutthroat Familia First Thursdays turn the store into a meeting place — film screenings, listening sessions, pop-ups and camp-out culture.
On air
VatoKayde and DJ Warras host a show on 5FM, connecting what South Africa was hearing with what it was wearing.
Our nights
Events have always run alongside the brand and every concept we build. With VatoKayde we host Only The Family (OTF) and Midnight Club in Johannesburg — our footprint there has never left, and Johannesburg will always be home.
PTF
Our own label begins with custom Protect The Family Alpha Industries bomber jackets, presented at an AFI fashion event and worn by AKA.
2022
A return to an intimate Sandton space on Wessel Road — a lounge, the regulars and specialist sourcing.
2024
In September the Cape Town flagship opens at Adelphi Galleria, 277 Main Road, with Café La Familia alongside. Protect The Family returns with sell-out releases at the end of the year.
Now
First Thursdays and Turbo Sundays bring music, cars, fashion and community together in Sea Point, while Only The Family and Midnight Club carry on in Johannesburg — always home, with a new Johannesburg space coming.
